The history of the Oakridge neighbourhood is centred around the Oakridge Public School, which was built in 1913 on Danforth Road where Oakridge Park is now situated. This school was demolished in 1967, and replaced by a modern school on Byng Road. A datestone memorial to the old Oakridge school stands at the Danforth Road entranceway to Oakridge Park.

Oakridge's development was largely influenced by Danforth Road, one of Toronto's oldest thoroughfares. Danforth Road had its own bus service as early as 1918, which helped to attract many homeowners to this area. Oakridge's growth was further enhanced in the 1950's, when the Bloor-Danforth subway line was extended east to Warden Avenue.

Oakridge is a mature neighbourhood that features an eclectic mix of older houses, a vibrant shopping district along Danforth Avenue and an abundance of recreational facilities and parkland.

Oakridge is bound on the north by ravine and park lands and on the south and east by the CN railway line and industry. A great deal of the social and recreational activity in this neighbourhood revolves around the Oakridge Community Recreation Centre on Pharmacy Avenue, and Oakridge Park on Danforth Avenue.

Oakridge houses come in a variety of sizes, shapes and styles. These houses were built from the 1910's to the 1950's. Most of the older Oakridge houses were self-built and then added onto and improved over time. New home construction is currently taking place in this neighbourhood, as some of the older houses give way to custom-designed, modern homes.

Danforth Road is brimming with small, independently owned retail shops and restaurants that cater to the immediate needs of the surrounding neighbourhood.

A popular destination point for Oakridge residents is Shoppers World, located at the south-west corner of Danforth Road and Victoria Park Avenue. This large shopping plaza is known for its many discount stores.

The Oakridge Community Recreation Centre, located at 63 Pharmacy Avenue, has a health club with cardio and weight equipment, a sauna, and a whirlpool. This centre also contains meeting rooms that are used by local community groups. The City of Toronto offers year-round recreational programs in the evenings at the Oakridge Public School on Byng Avenue. The Oakridge Seniors Bocce Club at 6 Thora Road has two indoor bocce courts.

Oakridge Park, located in the centre of this neighbourhood off Danforth Road, is a pretty park with many excellent picnic spots. This neighbourhood park has a children's playground, a spray pool, a baseball diamond and a sports field.

Bus routes on Victoria Park and Warden Avenues, and Danforth Road, connect passengers to stations on the Bloor-Danforth subway line. The Danforth Go Train station, on Main Street just south of the Danforth, ushers commuters to downtown Toronto's Union Station in approximately fifteen minutes.

Danforth Road provides motorists with an east-west arterial roadway that leads right into the centre of Toronto. It is approximately a twenty minute drive to downtown Toronto along this route, through one of Toronto's most vibrant and colourful shopping districts.
